Why use a laundry bag?

Some garments are better kept out of the washing machine, for example, because the fabric is very delicate or prone to pilling. Delicate fabrics such as silk and lace, and garments with embroidery, are vulnerable in the washing machine. During a wash cycle, garments are subjected to a lot of movement and friction as the drum spins and agitates them, which can lead to wear, distortion or even damage.

Washing your clothes in a laundry bag creates a protective barrier. This reduces friction, prevents fabrics from coming into contact with zippers or hooks, and helps keep colors vibrant for longer. A simple way to keep your favorite garments looking their best for longer!

Choose the right laundry bag size

Use a laundry bag that is large enough to allow the garments to move around freely. An overfilled bag can prevent clothes from getting properly clean. Ideally, you should have several sizes at home: a smaller one for items such as underwear and a larger laundry bag for sweaters, etc.

Choose from the following common laundry bag sizes:
- 25 x 30 (S)
- 30 x 40 cm (M)
- 40 x 50 cm (L)
- 60 x 60 cm (XL)

In our experience, S is too small, while M and L are ideal. Size XL is mainly intended for items such as bedding.

Choose laundry bags with a hidden zipper

When choosing a laundry bag, always pay attention to its zipper  Choose a laundry bag with a ‘hidden zipper’ so the zipper does not rub against and damage other garments. This is often what distinguishes high-quality laundry bags from lower-quality alternatives. STEAMRS laundry bags feature a specially designed zipper system that protects your clothes during washing.

Sort your garments

Put delicate fabrics such as lingerie, bras, silk, sportswear and lace garments in a laundry bag. It’s also best to put garments with zippers, buttons or hooks in a bag to prevent them from damaging other clothes.

Make sure you close the laundry bag properly

Make sure the bag is securely closed so clothes don’t fall out during washing. A sturdy closure, such as a zipper with a protective flap, is ideal.

Choose the right wash cycle

Use a gentle wash cycle at a low temperature and low spin speed to minimize wear. This not only helps keep clothes looking their best for longer, but also saves energy.

Laundry bags in the dryer

Some laundry bags are not designed for use in the dryer, but STEAMRS laundry bags are. For extra protection, you can safely use the laundry bags in the dryer too. This prevents delicate fabrics from being exposed to too much heat and movement, helping to limit shrinkage and distortion.

These items are best washed in a laundry bag

We recommend using a mesh laundry bag or laundry bag for delicate materials and fragile items. Think fabrics such as silk, wool, satin and lace. We also recommend washing the following garments or items in a mesh laundry bag or laundry bag:

    • items with embroidery;
    • clothes with sequins;
    • underwired bras;
    • sports bras with hooks;
    • lingerie;
    • and socks.

No more missing socks in the laundry

A laundry bag is ideal and very useful for small garments such as socks. Sometimes it seems as if socks simply disappear when you hang up the clean laundry: surely you put an even number in the washing machine? Put your socks in a laundry bag and you can be sure they won’t get lost, so you’ll never be left with odd socks again.

Although both laundry bags and mesh laundry bags are used to protect your clothes, there is a small difference between them. A mesh laundry bag has an open mesh structure, while a laundry bag closes with a zipper and therefore offers even more protection.

Washing with a laundry bag

Here’s how to protect your clothes as effectively as possible! Delicate garments and fabrics need extra care to maintain their quality and last longer. The washing machine can damage fabric with every wash and can be quite rough on clothes, especially items made of silk or lace, or those with small embellishments. A laundry bag or mesh laundry bag protects your clothes from wear, damage and fading.
