White streaks on your black trousers after washing? Here’s how to prevent them!

· STEAMRS Fashion Care

Witte strepen in je zwarte broek bij wassen? Zo voorkom je dat! - STEAMRS

Ruined your favorite black jeans with white streaks? Here’s how these streaks form, how to remove them from your jeans, and how to prevent them in the future.

Have you taken your laundry out of the washing machine only to discover, to your disappointment, white streaks on your beloved black jeans? Don’t worry, we have solutions to help prevent these common jeans problems!

Streaks on your laundry after washing

White streaks on dark laundry?
Those white streaks on your laundry aren’t caused by using too much detergent, but rather by an overloaded washing machine. When the drum is too full, the detergent doesn’t have enough room to dissolve completely, leaving soap residue on your clothes. Fortunately, this is easy to prevent. Make sure you don’t load the washing machine too full, and leave some space at the top—about one or two hand-widths—so the water and detergent can circulate freely.

White spots on black clothes can often be caused by leftover soap residue, limescale, or other minerals. Usually, you can simply wash them away by washing the garment again. If the streaks don’t come out after another wash, mix equal parts water and vinegar and gently dab the spots. Then rinse thoroughly. It’s always a good idea to test this method on an inconspicuous part of the garment first to prevent possible damage.

How do I keep my black pants black?

To preserve the intense color of your black pants, it’s important to wash them inside out. This minimizes friction with other garments. Use a mild detergent specially formulated for dark clothes to keep the color vibrant. Avoid excessive friction and high temperatures in the dryer, as these can cause the color to fade.

Use dryer balls in the tumble dryer

When you add wool dryer balls to your dryer, you won’t get white streaks on items such as black jeans. These dryer balls prevent white streaks and help keep your clothes in top condition for much longer.

Black streaks on light-colored laundry?
These annoying black streaks on your clothes can have several causes, from an overloaded drum to what is known as detergent sludge. Detergent sludge is a greasy substance left behind in the washing machine due to a buildup of various fats, flakes, and insoluble substances from the detergent. This can result in black streaks and spots on your clothes. But don’t worry, there are ways to prevent this. Try switching detergents from time to time and occasionally run a wash at 60 degrees or higher to clean the machine thoroughly.

Extra tips for trouble-free washing:

  • Don’t use too much detergent, and measure it according to the instructions on the package.
  • Clean the machine regularly, including the drawer, seals, sieves, and filters.
  • Avoid using short cycles too often to prevent inadequate rinsing.
  • Add dryer balls to the tumble dryer when drying.

But let’s not forget: prevention is key! Don’t fill the machine completely with dirty laundry—leave some room so the detergent can do its job. And if your pants need a quick refresh, give them a steam with a handy handheld garment steamer.

With these simple tips, your jeans will stay streak-free and always look great!
